Drift boat and walk-and-wade trips out of Cooper Landing.
Salmon on streamers · Rainbows and Dollies on the dry fly — rare anywhere in Alaska.
Ron Doebler grew up in Alaska. The upper Kenai River has been part of his life since boyhood — he started fishing these waters long before guiding was ever part of the picture. Forty years later, he knows every bend, riffle, and holding spot on the upper Kenai better than most people know their own neighborhoods.
He made the natural step to guiding because he wanted to share something he loves with people who might never otherwise experience it the right way. His specialty is dry fly technique — a style rarely practiced in Alaska, where most guides stick to nymphs and streamers because the numbers are easier. Ron chose the harder path. Watching a big rainbow rise to a surface fly against a backdrop of the Kenai Mountains is, in his words, "what it's all about."
Every trip starts with a read of that morning's conditions. Ron adjusts on the fly — where to float, what pattern to throw, when to be patient and when to move water. He works with all skill levels. If you've never held a fly rod, he'll get you fishing. If you've been at it for years, he'll put you on something you haven't seen before. Just mention where you're starting from when you reach out.
Dylan, in his second season as a guide, has quickly become a guest favorite. His enthusiasm for Alaska and fly fishing is genuine — and he's exceptional with kids and beginners. He brings the same unhurried, patient approach to the river that Ron built the operation on.
Ron also guides internationally — Belize, Baja, Christmas Island, Iceland, Chile, and Argentina — for anglers who want to chase different species in different corners of the world. New Zealand and Guatemala are coming soon. But the Kenai is home base, and the upper river in summer is still the trip he's most proud of.
